As I hung up the phone, I felt an overwhelming sense of weariness and exhaustion flooded my body.
I had felt like the person on the other end of the line had sucked out all my energy! I felt utterly deflated after the conversation ended.
Reading this, I bet you can relate! I’m sure there are certain people you know–or even strangers–that drain all your emotional energy in less time than it takes to place a Starbucks order!
While these Energy Suckers do their dirty work, the sad thing is that they generally don’t even realize the impact they have on others.
Learning how to gauge and guard your emotional energy is a HUGE deal and the focus of part three of this Energy Management series (click here for more on managing your physical energy). Maintaining and enhancing your emotional energy is one of the most under-regarded, yet amazingly important, aspects of learning how to live.
Did you know that research has shown that only 30% of your energy comes from physical sources and 70% is from emotional energy?
Mira Kirshenbaum, and author of The Emotional Energy Factor: The Secrets High-Energy People Use to Beat Emotional Fatigue knows all about it. She says: “Just as physical energy comes from diet, exercise and rest, emotional energy comes from the ways you take care of yourself emotionally – living in a way that makes you feel inspired, hopeful, self-confident, playful, loving and in touch with what you care about most.”
Here are my top three tips for enhancing your emotional energy:
Seek Out New Connections
Living and leading with positive energy and full engagement means emotional connection to relationships and activities in your life. Is there something you’ve wanted to try or someone you’ve wanted to meet? Consider what excites you now and do it! These types of meaningful connections to people and accomplishments will pay huge dividends to your emotional energy.
Hang Out With Energy Enhancers
You know who they are. These are the people that boost your energy just by being around them and leave you feeling motivated and powerful! You want to surround yourself with these Energy Enhancers so you can maintain and strengthen your emotional energy.
Take a Time Out
As a kid, I hated timeouts. I hated them because I couldn’t DO anything. But now as an adult, I crave moments of stillness and solitude. Those times when I can turn off my brain (and my iPhone) and reconnect with myself and my deeper calling. Even if you have to schedule it, find 15-30 minutes where you can shut off everything except what matters most to you. Notice how this enhances your emotional connection with others and the energy you gain as a result.
