Call me weird, but I’ve always been fascinated by mission statements. It’s all about personal mantras that guide individuals’ lives and organizational cultures with me. I’ve found that having something to stand for and live up to makes you stronger and more focused. It allows you to more fully Lead With Intention™.
I wrote my first “purpose statement” over a decade ago. It was at a staff retreat when I was working at UCLA supervising a team of student leaders. During this retreat, I had dedicated time to consider who I was and what I wanted to do in my life. It was central to my identity development as a young professional and person. It taught me the importance of making the time to pause and reflect. Especially when it comes to how my thoughts, beliefs, and actions align with my desired purpose.
Over the years, the specific words and phrases of this purpose statement have evolved. But the same core elements remain central to who I know myself to be and the impact I want to make in this world. Most recently, I’ve tailored these values, beliefs, and intentions into my own Manifesto. It guides my business and my life (click here for a printer-friendly version or here for an awesome graphic snippet).
As we start the new year, I invite you to dive deeper and create your own Personal Manifesto!
To get you started, I’ve created a simple, elegant exercise. It’s designed to harness the best of YOU so you can say it and share it with the world. Whether you’re a six-figure CEO or the parent of a six-year-old, creating your Personal Manifesto allows you to put power behind your purpose!
